October 8, 2009

Growing bonsai trees is a fascinating and very rewarding pastime. Growing bonsai is not an expensive pastime with only a few specialist tools needed. A bonsai tree is a true living sculpture that anyone would be very proud to own.

Bonsai are container grown plants or trees that are expressly developed to be a smaller version of its full size plant or tree. Bonsai trees can be developed from nearly any perennial wood stemmed trees and shrubs that grow branches, and is able to grow small through pot confinement with the help of crown and root pruning.

Bonsai trees can be developed from seed, young shoots taken from the wild (please observe any laws in respect of taking wild plants in your area), or can be purchased as ready grown bonsai trees. Obviously growing bonsai trees from seed is the slowest route, but you will then have total control of how your bonsai will grow.

Bonsai trees are planted in special bonsai pots that not only restrict root development, but are also designed to further enhance the appearance of the bonsai tree. Special growing compounds can be purchased that will provide the perfect environment for your bonsai tree to grow.

Many specialist techniques are used to shape your bonsai and give it character. These techniques include leaf trimming, wiring branches, grafting, short term dwarfing and deadwood, (a process used to age bark). Few special tools are needed to sculpt bonsai, and these can easily be bought for little cost. Everything you require to start growing bonsai can easily be bought from a bonsai nursery.

If you are wondering if growing bonsai trees is for you, I say give it a try, bonsai are easy to grow and maintain, and take a small amount of your time, every bonsai tree is unique, and who can’t help but to admire a bonsai.

Bonsai are available as both indoor and outdoor varieties, and some bonsai trees are best left outdoors in the summer and then grown inside during the colder winter months.

And for anyone that likes the idea, you can even purchase artificial bonsai trees.
