Car Accessories - They’re Not Just For Breakfast Anymore

October 31, 2009

It’s that season again, and you want to get your teenager a gift they want, then you need to read this tutorial about car accessories. With a little lingo in your pocket and a good set of ears, you should be able to figure out what to slide under the Christmas tree this year.

These days, it’s wheels, wheels, wheels - what showcases the tyres and car the best. Some like to select brilliantly hued, bulge acorn lug nuts or a cool center cap for rims of chrome, gun metal or customized color. Others slap on a set of stylish spinners, embracing the fashion of hip-hoppers like 50 Cent, Nelly and Redman. Lights under the car have been taking off. It will certainly get you noticed.

Just a Few Terms to Get You Started:

• Spinners are wheel accoutrements that move on roller bearings, your wheels get a nice impact of movement that is totally unexpected. Because rim spinners work independent of the outside rim they rotate even when the car stops at a red light, the law of momentum kicks in and they continue to spin due to the low resistance of the roller bearings.

• When you buy a car your rims have what are called factory center caps. To make your rims more appealing, you can purchase high-style chrome center caps that will set your car apart.

• Center caps can be snapped into place when upgrading your tires with aftermarket rims. The caps cover the center of the rim and can have all manner of designs - domestic or foreign logos, even a concept design. If you want to save some cash on a set of center caps for rims then stop by a salvage yard and take a look around. Check out the Web; there’s a huge network of suppliers ready, willing and happy to help.

• Rims bought from a manufacturer other than the car maker are called aftermarket rims and are used to personalize your car. Aftermarket rims come with center caps but you can obtain a set of unique center caps to really make them stand out.

• A hub cap, on the other hand, is a wheel cover that protects the lug nuts and spans virtually the entire wheel rim.

• Small LEDs can also be placed on your rims. The diodes emit a glowing light and are powered by small long-life batteries.

• Wheel spacers give extra width to the wheels and tires, moving them a little closer to the fenders. This improves handling and visually adds a more aggressive presence.
