Budgeting That New Home

December 16, 2009

I still feel like a child inside. I have a hard time looking in the mirror and locating a fully realized adult. I would have thought the birth of my second child would have changed it, but I still appear to be in self-denial of the aging process.

Speaking of aging — or rather putting it off — my wife and I moved into a brand new house and it possesses enough space in its basement for a home gym my wife had always desired. But I am seeing dollar signs when I ponder the many diverse items essential, from the essential but oft-neglected weight-lifting benches and exercise mat to determining the most versatile stationary bike. An exercise bike can be difficult now a days. Do you go with a recumbent or an upright bicycle? Should I go with a digital or old-school analog?

And then my wife appears set on getting an elliptical machine as well. You read that right. One of the exercise bikes and an elliptical trainer — not just one or the other. My guess is that the extra exercise equipment goes with the stretch mark cream she began utilizing after she bore our youngest child. I may regret that joke.

I must be careful with the budget because our new home is more of a fixer-upper. We wanted it this way, but we still have to cautiously budget every little thing, even the cabinet knob (I’m not jesting). My wife has a pretty ambitious kitchen cabinet remodeling design plotted, but I have to remind her the bathroom sink she wants put in will set us back a fair amount, as well.

Gratefully, she and I both appreciate the organic, rustic style, so we’re furnishing our new home with furniture which is unfinished. Of course, it still requires some finishing, but we can keep the costs down and make better furniture than we could purchase anywhere anyways.

I uncovered a good with some decent, natural knotting and a couple console tables in matching oak. For our patio outside we’re exploring outside fireplaces and we’ll furnish with a little budget furniture made with wicker to start.

Supplying a new house may seem so adult, but I can’t help but sense I’m just playing house. The new exercise equipment and furniture only feel like a new generation of playthings.
